Liposuction

Liposuction, liposculpture, lipocontouring are all words used to describe the technique whereby a suction canula placed through small stab incisions is used to remove excess fatty tissue. This should be seen as a contouring procedure and works best when specific bulges of fatty tissue are being removed. As with an abdominoplasty, liposuction should not be viewed as a weight reduction procedure to avoid dieting but should be reserved for the correcting of abnormal contours.

Liposuction can be done in many areas of the body with some areas being particularly amenable to achieve a good result. We will discuss the merits of treating individual areas with you prior to surgery with the aim of ensuring that your expectations are realistic and can be met.

Depending upon the areas to be treated liposuction can be done under local anaesthesia or general anaesthesia. It is usually done as a day case. Following surgery you will be asked to wear a firm support garment for a month. This can of course be removed for washing. Dressings will remain on the wounds for one week following surgery.

Providing you are wearing support it is important that you resume normal exercise as early as possible to reduce the risk of complications and maintain fitness.
